Yesterday the news broke that James White, a politics student at the University of York, had killed and cooked his housemate's pet hamster.

The Syrian hamster, who weighed less than 200g, was handled roughly and then placed in a frying pan and cooked. It is unclear whether White's rough treatment or the intense heat he applied eventually killed the small pet, because the judge refused to listen to forensics. He has escaped a jail sentence thus far because of this lack of clarity, despite it being clear that he killed the creature cruelly and without reason. He received only 120 hours of community service for unprovoked animal abuse. This petition will be sent to district judge Roy Anderson to beg him to reconsider a harsher sentence for the animal killer.

Hamsters are some of the sweetest, most popular pets, often owned by children and adults alike. Yet they are sadly undervalued; had White killed a cat in such a violent fashion public revulsion would be far greater. Please remember that hamsters have brittle bones and it is likely she suffered broken bones and severe agony before her death. Sign this petition to help spread the message that animal cruelty is never acceptable.
