Request Presidential Apology/Investigation for USPHS-conducted Study

In 1929, the United States Public Health Service conducted an unethical study on human subjects, known as the Rosenwald Fund Study.  This Study involved 40,000 African-Americans of all ages and sexes.  It started in the state of Mississippi as a pilot program, but was later expanded to 5 additional states (TN, AL, GA, NC, VA).  The patients were prescribed highly toxic doses of mercury and other chemicals for at least a year.  Mercury and other heavy metals have a congenital effect on future generations through childbirth, ultimating resulting in preexisting conditions.   On December 21, 2011 the EPA and President Obama achieved a historic victory through the Mercury and Air Toxic Standards ruling.

The state of TN deviated from other states and conducted the study on family units because families were known to congregate.   This was the first time many received healthcare in America.  The Public Health Service was also looking for a group of "cooperative whites" to perform the study on.  Subsequent PHS Studies (Tuskegee and Guatemala) have received national apologies/investigations from former President Clinton and President Obama, respectively.

As a veteran of the USAF, I served my country honorably for 24 years.  I recently requested an apology/investigation through Health and Human Services and was denied by the CDC.  This Study was clearly a violation of American's human rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states in the preamble "Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace in the world."  Nations globally celebrate National Human Rights Day annually on December 10th.

A presidential apology/investigation into the Rosenwald Fund Study is clearly warranted.
