Please, SIGN and SHARE this petition. I am not Hungarian, I am just another European who got to know and is worry about people dying from asbestos in a poor area in Hungary, only an hour driving from Budapest in county Heves.... The cleaning of the asbestos over there is what I would call a "cowboy job" (this means a really bad and cheap job), so people will continue dying from asbestos in the future if a good job is not done properly.

PLEASE, TELL THE HUNGARIAN GOVERNMENT TO CLEAN PROPERLY THE LORINCI-ZAGYVASZANTO REGION FROM ASBESTOS, OVERSEE THE WORK TO MAKE SURE THE JOB IS DONE PROPERLY, AND HELP THE PEOPLE LIVING IN THE CONTAMINATED AREA

I am not Hungarian, I am just a foreigner who has got to know about this horrific human catastrophe in the Lőrinci-Zagyvaszántó region, only one hour driving from Budapest.

According to the website of the Hungarian Government, "the Hungarian Government decided to completely do away with health hazards related to asbestos: waste disposal must start immediately in the Lőrinci-Zagyvaszántó region".... BUT, SADLY, THIS IS NOT VERY ACCURATE.

The factory of asbestos located in Lorinci had been privatized after the change of regime, it puts an end to the operation in 2004, since then, the EU banned the manufacture of products containing asbestos. Asbestos removal last owner of the plant, the Selyp Invest Ltd. fell away. The company's demolition of the buildings are not taken into account the safety standards, the factory area is surprised several inches thick on the cement containing asbestos is toxic.

According to the news a lot of money has been allocated for the removal of hazardous waste by the government, to clean contaminated soil ..... but only ten centimeters deep! while the contamination on the ground may be a few metres!

According to people from that area, the hungarians who are doing this dirty job are not using protection at all! They are not using even a simple mask or gloves! Nothing at all! Does the government know about it??? Are they turning a blind eye??? Is legal under the European law to have workers in the European Union cleaning this hazardous material without any kind of protection? How much worth the lives of Hungarian people for its politicians from Budapest?

Why is asbestos dangerous?

According to the UK Government website, Asbestos still kills thousand of  workers each year. Asbestos is not just a problem of the past. It can be present today in any building built or refurbished before the year 2000.

When materials that contain asbestos are disturbed or damaged, fibres are released into the air. When these fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases. These diseases will not affect you immediately; they often take a long time to develop, but once diagnosed, it is often too late to do anything.

Asbestos can cause the following fatal and serious diseases:

Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a cancer which affects the lining of the lungs (pleura) and the lining surrounding the lower digestive tract (peritoneum). It is almost exclusively related to asbestos exposure and by the time it is diagnosed, it is almost always fatal.

Asbestos-related lung cancer
Asbestos-related lung cancer is the same as (looks the same as) lung cancer caused by smoking and other causes. It is estimated that there is around one lung cancer for every mesothelioma death.

Asbestosis
Asbestosis is a serious scarring condition of the lung that normally occurs after heavy exposure to asbestos over many years. This condition can cause progressive shortness of breath, and in severe cases can be fatal.

Pleural thickening
Pleural thickening is generally a problem that happens after heavy asbestos exposure. The lining of the lung (pleura) thickens and swells. If this gets worse, the lung itself can be squeezed, and can cause shortness of breath and discomfort in the chest.
