Send Makoon To Bear With Us Sanctuary

Makoon is a bear cub who was found dying in a ditch by a St. Malo man on March 25. He was underweight and starving, after spending a few days in the community and after becoming the most popular bear in St. Malo, Makoon was taken by Manitoba conservation officials, and put into Assinibonie Park Zoo in Winnipeg. 

The Manitoba government fears that during the first few days of the bears   contact with humans he lost his natural fear of them, bear cubs are highly impressionable, this may make Makoon a "nuisance" bear when he grows up, this fear however is not stoping them from allowing his release in June/July, if this happens, a five month old cub would be released into the wild without the necessary weight and skills to survive. 

Many bear officials say that if this cub is released in June or July than there is a good chance of death. The Manitoba government denies this and is giving a 10-50% chance of survival. There is an alternative though, if this cub is sent to Bear With Us sanctuary in Ontario they can guarantee a survival rate of 70-100%. This cub drastically needs the guidance that Bear With Us can provide. Please give this animal the chance it deserves, send him to Bear With Us.

Dear Manitoba Government, 

I respect your decision to rescue Makoon from a quick death, however, your allowance of releasing this cub in June/July is not right. Subjecting a five month old bear to a world that is not friendly is practically a death sentence, this cub needs to increase in weight and skill to have any possible chance of survival. The bear needs to be sent to Bear With Us sanctuary in Ontario, where you give a 10-50% chance of survival in the wild, they say, with a little training and a full year more at thier facility the bear can be released with a 70-100% chance of living through his years in the wild. 

Many bear experts say that releasing a cub at such a young age, as you intend, will give the animal a poor chance in the wild, and the "Reserch" you have backing your proposal can't be seriously used in a case like Makoon's. For one this data is way out of date, it was taken at a time when there was less human contact and less danger from humans. Secondly, the bears that survived were a small percentage, I would not trust a animals life on a few survivals, this whole event can be avoided and remedied by simply sending this cub to Bear With Us. They are willing and able to raise this cub and release him next year. 

This is a very important cause for me and many other Canadians, please be the responsible leaders we nee and send Makoon to Bear With Us.
