Tell Congress To Stop LGBT Employment Discrimination

  • by: Lynn Hamilton

A newly married gay man now has the right to come home and say, "Honey, I've been fired."

The Supreme Court has declared that gay couples have the same right to marry as their straight colleagues. It is a very real victory, but the fight for equality is far from over. No federal law protects those same gay individuals from employment discrimination.

In twenty-nine states, gay and lesbian employees can be fired--or not hired in the first place--simply because of their sexual orientation. It's clearly time for a change.

Please join with me in demanding that United States Representatives and Senators support the introduction and passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act in the 114th Congress which will reverse the right of employers to discriminate against the LGBT community.

Dear Representatives and Senators of the United States:

We the undersigned are delighted by the recent Supreme Court announcement that provides equal access to marriage for all Americans. However, we remain concerned that there is no protection for the LGBT community against arbitrary and prejudicial employment decisions. In twenty-nine states, an employer may fire an employee or withhold a job from someone who is gay. That same employer may show favoritism to a job candidate who is less qualified, but straight. This situation is untenable in a country that values freedom and equality and fairness. Please support the introduction and passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act in the 114th Congress which will reverse the right of employers to discriminate against the LGBT community.
