Please sign and share this petition in an effort to stop an animal shelter in the Sacramento area from adopting out their animals without having them spayed or neutered first, as is the practice with most adoption agencies. The reason there are so many adoptee, feral and stray animals is due to an overpopulation issue but the shelter feels it is acceptable to adopt the animals out without having them fixed; a law violation.

It has been discovered that the Front Street Animal Shelter in the Sacramento area is literally considering adopting out animals without having them spayed or neutered as is the common practice in such situations to prevent an escalation of pet populations. The director of the shelter states that “We’ve taken some calculated risks I guess. We’ve only when we’ve absolutely had to. Otherwise an animal may have to sit here for four to six weeks, and if that occurs then animals coming in have no place to stay and our kill rate goes up.”

The Front Street Animal Shelter was adapting to a new process in order to get more animals adopted quicker rather than following proper protocol. They got around the process by insisting that new owners come back with their animals for a later surgery date, which is not a guarantee that the animals would be fixed as promised.

An animal lover and spokesperson against the shelter's practices stated that “The people can have the best intentions that they will bring their new pet back to get spayed or neutered, but the animal escapes, goes out the front door or goes over the fence and then you end up having more animals." It appears that the new surgery unit at the shelter with one veterinarian and lack of funds is the main cause for a lack of performing the necessary spaying and neutering procedures prior to an adoption; definitely a poor decision.

Animal advocate says budget constraints should not be an excuse for potentially allowing unwanted breeding. “We certainly don’t need more animals. The shelter is struggling to keep up with the intake that it has." Law Enforcement & Animal Control of Sacramento, CA - Investigate the Front Street Animal Shelter and ensure that they do not adopt animals out from their facility that are not fixed prior to an adoption. Otherwise, the facility is promoting animal overpopulation. Even if and when they do adopt out an animal, regulations should be implemented that they do not allow the new owners to bring the pet home until after its surgery for neutering and spaying. Stop the overpopulation of animals by insisting that they follow proper procedure or otherwise be held accountable!
