Deny the 95% Attendance Rate!

I attend Littlerock High School in Littlerock, California. I am currently in my senior year there. First semester I received a back injury partaking in a school activity. Due to this injury, I missed a lot of school because of the tremendous amount of pain that I was in. I was under the care of my doctor and the school was aware of that. Fast forward to second semester, I am doing a lot better with my injury, I am still in pain, but I have been going to school a lot more because I am going to physical therapy now. There was a new rule that got enforced second semester stating that if students do not have a 95% attendance rate then they can not partake in any school activities such as sports, school, dances, etc. This new rule is affecting the senior class the most at hand because that is taking away our privileges to attend our prom/ grad night. This rule is unfair and unjust because it was just enforced the second semester, but the rule is applying to first semester and also this semester. 95% is a really steep and unrealistic attendance rate. Most of my senior class is not making that cut. First semester started January 9, 2017 and we did not get notice about this rule until February 7, 2017. Our prom is April 7, 2017 and our grad night is May 6, 2017. This has been causing uproar with the entire school including parents/ family members and even some faculty staff members. A lot of complaints have been occurring. We believe the attendance rate is unfair because people have all sort of reasons as to why they are not at school. Such as illnesses, bereavement, sick relatives, etc. People can not always be at school. Things happen, life happens. A lot of seniors have already purchased or put a down payment on their prom dresses/ tuxedos. This is not fair to them because they have wasted their money. We have worked hard all four years to be told that we can not attend our own prom/ grad night. All of us were and still are looking forward to attending these significant senior activities/ events. This is inherently wrong because this is just a great big slap in the face to all of us seniors and the seniors who will come after class of 2017. This rule has never been enforced the previous years. Usually the cut off for prom is having a 2.0 GPA or above and being on track with your credits to graduate. Those requirements are very reasonable, but they are being outweighed by the 95% attendance rate. This rule should be abolished because it is taking something away that we have all worked so hard for. A lot of my friends are being denied even though they have an attendance rate of a 94%, 93%, etc. The school is making the students attend Saturday school to make up one day of an absence. That does not make sense because we should not have to attend Saturday school for a rule that should have never been enforced in the first place. The 95% attendance rate needs to be denied, it is doing more harm than good. Had we had known of this rule prior to second semester,  it would have been a better ideal,  but none of us were aware and that is the issue. It's upsetting because most of us do not understand why the school would enforce something at the last minute,  but then apply it to a previous occurrence. We all deserve to go and have fun and have a chance to experience the rest of our senior year with no ridiculous discriminatory limits. The school has spent thousands of dollars on our prom venue, but since this new "rule" is enforced, most of us won't even be able to go which makes it a waste if their own money. They are being discriminatory against us which is not right. My goal is to spread the word and get as many people as I can to sign this petition and fight for our justice. I want the 95% attendance rate to be abolished. That is my goal. I want our voices to be heard. We don't deserve to be silenced. We all deserve a chance.
