The Right To Go Home

New York City is home to the most racially integrated community globally. Families from all over reside here from different countries to live freely & righteously. Amongst us are hard workers, leaders & students with common core values. With New York's economy; living is becoming difficult, factors such as expenses & crime create complexity in operation. Commuting is vital to our homes & work life. The safety of our youth & adults affects the peace of mind in every household. The State's current laws places any commuter driving with a suspended license under immediate arrest no matter the circumstance. For instance, I recall traveling with my father to get driven to home from work; at the time I was a personal trainer in Astoria, Queens. My father, Local 6 union employee, Community Leader & former Police Officer was within minutes from the highway when suddenly we get pulled over. License & registration was given to the officers, turns out that my fathers licensed had been suspended due  to insurance several days prior. We were not aware & requested courtesy to go home safely, at the time I did not have my drivers license. In front of me, police officers arrested my father leaving me with a parked vehicle & emotional damage at 18 years old. Regret & concern flooded my mind, what if I had taken the train instead. In distress, I found a licensed driver that helped me transport the vehicle home. This is a feeling I would not wish on anyones family. My mother, younger sister & I worried at home. Fortunately my father was released next morning from Queens Central Bookings. This circumstance is unfair & unfortunately many New Yorkers face this, miss work & time with family as result. During hard times, setbacks as such are detrimental to everyone. I believe New Yorkers deserve the courtesy to return home in exchange for a fine/violation & not be treated like a criminal in such situation. We hold our families dearly in this city & work very hard to keep this economy flourishing, Our taxes are paid & jobs are worked. We give back to our community via Non-Profit organizations, take care of our families & sacrifice our time to be here. Support the people of this city & treat us as humans for we deserve the right to return home. Our families wait & mistakes will be corrected. This petition is to prevent arrests going forward based on Motor Vehicle Operations with a suspended license. Difficulties increase in New York but time is the most expensive currency to pay in the city that does not sleep. Thank you.
