Demand an end to cat hunt in the Netherlands!

  • by: francisca levi
  • recipient: Minister for Agriculture Sharon Dijksma

In the Netherlands there are 3 million cats, with an estimate of many ten thousands of stray cats. Many provinces in the Netherlands solve the problem by shooting the cats. Every year hunters shoot about 8.000 to 13.500 cats!
Sometimes these are cats with an owner, who by accident get killed by the hunters. More often it is about cats who have no choice than to survive on campings or vacation parcs. They need to because they are left behind, dumped, or are the next generation of former house cats who were dumped.

There is a much better and cat friendly solution to solve the problem of stray cats.
- Required Chip Identification.
- Controling stray cat population by catching, sterilize, vaccinate and return  (TNR trap neuter return) the stray cats to their colony.
- Education by means of great national campaigns in which (future) cat owners   will be pointed to the responsibilities towards and costs of a housecat.
- Catching and socializing of kittens who were born in the wild.
- Rehoming of (chipped, sterilized, vaccinated) stray cats at farmers where      they cause no trouble.

We cannot be passive and watch.

The Dutch Animal Protection Organization (Dierenbescherming) finds the hunt on stray cats cruel and unacceptable. A cat and society friendly solution is available. We must act now!

Please help us solve the stay cat problem in an animal friendly manner. In a short while Frank Dales the head of the Dutch Animal Protection Organization will present the petition to our Minister of Agriculture Sharon Dijksma.

Update #310 years ago
Good News! The Dutch Party for Animals filed a motion to ban the cat hunt. The House of Representatives voted in favor of the ban. The Province of Utrecht, one of the 7 Dutch Provinces who hunts cats, will not change their policy and continues to hunt cats until they will be stopped by national law. Flevoland, (Dutch Province) on the other hand, didn't want to wait and immediately stopped their cat hunting. We will continue with the petition until the NATIONAL BAN ON CAT HUNT IS FACT!

Quotes minister Sharon Dijksma: " i love cats myself and this is the last thing i would want". "This shouldn't be a mainstream solution". I say: "this shouldn't be a solution ever"!
