Demand Quality Food at Dickinson College

As fellow Dickinsonians's striving to make the best of our college experiences, it is important we share our concern. As engaged students and consumers, it has come to our attention that the dining services and food options at Dickinson are not of the quality that our school strives to hold. When entering Dickinson College we quickly fell victim to a false narrative of "A plate for every palate," alluding to healthy food, farm fresh fruits, and a variety of food options. Upon arriving the inconsistencies in food service were quickly apparent.
We are offered the same flavorless, unhealthy, and undesirable food on an estimated 7-day rotation, with little creativity. There has been a number of complaints about taste, food contamination, proper cooking, and food safety, but with little acknowledgment from staff, not much has changed. With little options outside of Dickinson's Dining Services, student's nutrition, health, and rated quality of life at Dickinson has suffered immensely. Without proper nutrition, students are more prone to ailments, sluggishness, obesity, eating disorders, and depression. With majority starches being offered at the Quarry, Snar, Biblio, and Caf, students lack other vital options. While the salad bar, sushi, and fruits pose an option, they are not sufficient enough to fulfill a meal let alone satisfy growing college students.
Items such as Smoothies, Grab N' Go, and other small snacks qualify as full swipes, which deducts a full meal from the Any 20 plan. As active students with personal and academic expectations, proper nutrition is vital to maximum productivity. As students at Dickinson College, we are constantly expected to perform to the best of our academic abilities with little room for error. We are understandably expected to be attentive/participative in class, have good attendance, stay involved throughout campus, while also investing in our own personal commitments. But, how can this be fulfilled when we lack the fundamental necessities to operate as healthy beings? Because Dickinson mandates that we live on campus, food options should be one of our schools biggest priorities.
Quality of life is just as important as academics while Dickinson offers both residential and academic facilities. As students and consumers, we ask for a comprehensive review of food services at Dickinson. We recommend that our school have more meals centered around healthy, organic eating; rather than our usual starch oriented, and prepackaged/freezer meals. We also recommend Dickinson explore the possibility of collaborating with neighboring schools food plans, such as Franklin and Marshall, or solely reaching out, to discuss better tactics for healthier meals.
