Tell JCPenney to Stay Closed During Thanksgiving Dinner!

In recent years, major retailers have pushed their Black Friday sales all the way back to Thanksgiving Day, in a phenomenon known as "Black Friday Creep." Though R.E.I., Staples and Game Stop decided to stay closed on Black Friday this year, JCPenney plans to open its doors at 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, a time when many families plan to sit down to enjoy their holiday feast.

“Thanksgiving is one of the few holidays that celebrates family and community, no matter your faith or cultural background,” says Ryan Zeilman, an employee at Target. Yet many retail employees are faced with the difficult dilemma of spending time with their families or turning down extra cash and the opportunity to impress their boss.

Thanksgiving should be a time of relaxation and togetherness, where families can enjoy each others company without stressing about leaving dinner to go to work. Opening earlier does not even translate to bigger long-term sales, as shoppers simply shift their shopping habits to whenever the stores open, resulting in lower sales later on. Please sign the petition to urge JCPenney to postpone their sales until Thanksgiving is over!

We, the undersigned, are concerned with your plans to open at 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
