We, the undersigned members of the community, would like to express our deep concern regarding the ongoing renovation of Kelly Park Playground, as approved by the local Community Board. While we acknowledge that updates and enhancements are essential, we firmly believe that the current proposal does not sufficiently address the requirements of all community members.
Specifically, the proposed renovation project totally neglects the needs of children aged 12 and older (the new design specifically points to this). Eliminating the workout area and basketball court, which are vital amenities for older children and teenagers, could negatively impact not only their physical health but also their social development. Depriving this age group of existing sports facilities may lead to various issues associated with their wellbeing.
We recognize that soccer is a highly popular sport among our community's children, and we implore the NYC Parks and Recreation Department to ensure that the renovation plans accommodate soccer fields and other sports facilities favored by the community.
We are aware that the renovation has already commenced; however, given that no new structures have been built yet, we believe it is still possible to revise the plans. We urge the NYC Parks and Recreation Department to act swiftly and reassess the renovation plans to guarantee that crucial aspects of the park's original design are retained and expanded to cater to the needs of all community members, including older children and teenagers.
