Urge Ontario to Protect the North French River

The North French River is an important river in Northern Ontario and one of the few fresh water drinking sources for Northern First Nations communities. The Moose Cree First Nation has implemented a conservation plan within their own communities and has called upon the Ontario government to commit to their own conservation plan to prevent mining, logging and development from happening within the North French watershed.

The North French watershed is home woodland caribou, several species of at-risk birds as well as a variety of fish, including a genetically unique sturgeon population.

While the Moose Cree have been working hard over the last 14 years to protect this vital Northern ecosystem, the Ontario government has been non-committal.

By signing today you are standing with the Moose Cree in their call for provincial protection of this pristine and culturally significant watershed.

To the Honourable Kathleen Wynne,

The North French River is a culturally and environmentally significant watershed and must be protected. I stand with the Moose Cree First Nation in their ongoing call to protect this landscape form mining, logging and development projects.

I know that this protection would aid Ontario in the objectives set for in the Far North Act and the Endangered Species Act, as well as the climate goals set at COP21, through carbon sequestering.

I call on the province to protect the North French River watershed and to heed the recommendations of the Moose Cree First Nation.
