Deny the White House to any global warming denier in 2020.

  • by: Steve Davis
  • recipient: All American voters, regardless of party preference

Human activity is already causing visible and irreversible damage to our natural world that imperils human civilization:

1. Ocean acidification: Already destroying coral reefs which host a third of all marine species.

2. Extreme weather: Droughts and longer wildfire seasons in the western U.S.

3. Flooding along coastal regions around the world.

Any 2020 U.S. presidential candidate who denies or casts doubt about the link between human activity and global warming must, therefore, be excluded from consideration by American voters. As the world's largest economy and second-largest greenhouse gas emitter, the United States must provide global leadership on this urgent issue that presents an existential threat to human civilization. The next American president must, therefore, provide full-throated leadership on policy solutions and rise to the challenge of our time. A global warming denier is incapable of this and must never be elected.

We just elected a man who denies that human activity causes global warming. He has put other deniers in the EPA, DOE and State Department.

Meanwhile, the American people have woken up to the threat of global warming and a majority now want decisive policy action to deal with the problem.

Yet, as we've seen recently, politicians still pander to Big Oil. Why?

1. We, the people, have yet to send them a clear and unequivocal message: "Failure to lead on global warming will result in your exclusion from consideration as a candidate."

2. Donations from the fossil fuel industry do more to determine their viability as candidates than our impact as voters.

Its that simple. (As disappointing as that sounds.)

Please sign our petition to put a price on denialism and casting doubt. Let's insist that THEY put a price on carbon. For the sake of our kids, grandkids and ourselves.

Update #17 years ago
Obviously, I failed to get this petition the notice that it deserved. With the election behind us, we now have what I feared the most: A denier now inhabits the White House. Let's get the word out to stop this from ever happening again.
