TJX Recycling Program

Did you know that that almost 230 million tons of municipal solid waste or trash are
generated in this country annually? That means each of us is responsible for an average of 4.5 pounds of solid waste per day... not to mention the ludicrous waste of paper and plastic tossed in compactors every day at work.

I am proposing this petition as a concerned TJX Corporation employee in the hopes that TJX Headquarters will choose to become a leader in the development of an“environmental conscience” and spearhead the introduction of recycling programs within the corporate retail sector of the USA.

Over 75% of all materials used in our stores are recyclable. When cost analysis figures are compared cost vs. price for large quantity items like cardboard, there is a significant savings for the company to opt IN for recycling, to the tune of $4,000-5,000 annually conservatively per store. (Those figures reflect an average usage of 400 tons of cardboard per year.) This is not inclusive of the amount of trash waste we could save through recycling used plastic store bags and plastic bottles from vending machines etc. In regards to paper recycling alone (the most cost effective form of recycling to date), the stats are that if every American recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we could save about 25 million trees each year. Just imagine how many trees we can save by recycling shoe boxes every day at our stores! And considering how our children's children are going to need trees to - well, you know - BREATHE... it seems like a rational thing to consider... especially when the price for recycled paper is at such a premium! (Pay outs are current to 2015 roughly 1-3 cents on the pound for paper/paperboard recycled material)

Let's get the attention of our corporate leaders and do something amazing! Let's do more than just collect a weekly paycheck... Let's help to change the way retail business is being done in the USA! Let's consider the impact we're making on this planet... and the consequence that our carbon footprint will have on the next generation and the generation after that. It is our duty to do something.
