Help Change NFL Concussion Rules (three game recover period)

Football is debatably the most American thing besides burgers, baseball, and of course apple pie. We venerate its players, and look forward to the days they play, up to the culmination of a year’s worth of 100 yard battles known as the super bowl. But we’ve only just started to learn about the consequences our modern day gladiators are dealing with after their careers are over. A type of brain damage called CTE found in football players and boxers, and caused by excessive concussions. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy according to many medical sites and more specifically Boston University CTE center research claims that CTE creates symptoms such as “depression, aggression, anxiety, suicidality, parkinsonism, and eventually progressive dementia.” Unfortunately CTE can only be diagnosed after death. This has lead football players like former bears defensive back, Dave Deurson to shoot himself in the chest after texting his family that he probably had CTE. This according to the New York Times. Another example is Chiefs Linebacker Jovan Belcher who killed his girlfriend before killing himself. We are losing players to excess concussions. To properly enjoy the sport both as spectators and citizens of a just nation, we can’t let this injustice continue.
We must prolong the waiting period for players so they can recover from one concussion before possibly getting another. If not a whole season then at least 3 games. Although concussions can vary in intensity I believe the wait period is too flexible encouraging recklessness and devaluing safety.
