McDonald's: Drop Your Seattle Lawsuit and Pay Workers a Fair Wage Nationwide!

The McDonald's Corporation sued the city of Seattle in response to a law to raise the minimum wage to 15 dollars. They claim that the law violates the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which was originally written to protect newly freed slaves. In their spin, they claim McDonald's franchises are independently owned, and the law imposes significantly higher labor costs on small franchises compared to their larger competitors.

The current minimum wage in Seattle stands at $9.47. An employee working a full 40-hour work week year round would still make under $20,000 annually at that rate. $20,000 is not an adequate living for a single person in Seattle, let alone people with families. That is why over half of fast food workers end up supplementing with public assistance.

Raising the minimum wage would not hurt McDonald's franchise owners, who would end up paying into public benefits if not directly paying their workers a fair wage. Raising the minimum wage would help franchise owners by boosting employee morale and health. Please sign the petition to urge McDonald's to drop their lawsuit and pay their workers a fair $15/hour wage!
