Stop the Abuse of Seniors in Ontario's Long Term Care Homes!

Visual transparency in government regulated long term care homes is desperately needed to protect our vulnerable elderly. Because our McGuinty government refuses to allow the Ombudsman to investigate the abuses in these homes, cameras are essential in proving the unfortunate realities for many institutionalized seniors.

The star.com recently posted the Sylvia Bailey video, showing the abusive treatment received in a long term care home that is unfortunately a reality for many of our institutionalized seniors:

Therefore, we ask that all concerned citizens of Ontario who have a loved one in long term care, or fear that they may be moving into one of these unprotected homes, sign this petition asking for the installation of cameras in every area of the homes where residents must live.

In light of your decision to defeat The Ombudsman Bill in May of 2011, we the undersigned ask that you invest in video surveillance systems for every long term care home in the province in order to provide the necessary protection that can be afforded to our vulnerable frail elderly citizens.

Recently the Toronto Star released video footage of the late Sylvia Bailey, showing her experience in one of your regulated long term care homes. The cell phone video shows this woman screaming in pain, as she had done for twenty-four days and nights, because your home refused to give her an x-ray for her broken tibia. As such, we kindly ask that you and your colleagues watch this video to see for yourself the extent of abuse in one of your homes:

This woman did not need to suffer. Therefore, would your government embrace the power of video technology and install cameras in every area of every home where residents must live? In doing so, your government can show us what you state it already does - to serve and protect one of the most vulnerable populations in our province.

By installing cameras, you are installing faith into our long term care system.

Thank you for taking the time to hear our concerns, as we speak for those who no longer have a voice or choice in their care.

Sincerely,

Concerned Citizens for Our Frail Elderly
