Stop Lynas; Save Malaysia!

Lynas Corporation, Ltd. is an Australian rare earths mining company, listed on the Australian Securities Exchange as a S&P/ASX 200 company. It has two major operations: a mining and concentration plan at Mount Weld, Western Australia, and a refining facility now under construction at Kuantan, Malaysia. Now, it may occur to you on why am I addressing this issue and how it relates to you.
First of all, Malaysia is a megadiverse country with a high number of species and high levels of endemism. Therefore, it is estimated to contain 20 per cent of the world's animal species. About two thirds of Malaysia is covered in forest, with some forests believed to be 130 million years old. This fact, also include Kuantan inside of course. The Malaysian government knows this facts and aims to balance economic growth with environmental protection but has been accused of favouring big business over the unreplacable gift from Mother Nature herself.
Secondly, the below are facts from EIA/DOE about Lynas and its future consequences to Malaysia.
1. Lynas will produce 260k ton of solid waste per YEAR.
2. Lynas Plant will use 720 ton of concentrated Hydrochloride Acid/Sulphuric Acid per DAY.
3. It will drain 500 tons of treated water in to the Balok river per HOUR.
4. It will release 99k normal m cube of highly toxic and dangerous radon gas per HOUR to the environment.
5. To keep the solid waste, it has to build an earth pond 7 acres with a depth of 8 meters per year. Do you think Malaysia has the space qualified to provide that?
6. There is no reference to radioactive waste. If that is not pollution, what is?
What about the waste? That is the biggest concern that drew Himpunan Hijau to protest. Lynas Corp claims that the waste will be used to make products which will be safe or stored in secure containers in certain sites. Where exactly are the sites? Is it going to be in Malaysia? Word has it that to attract Lynas to build their site here, they are exempted from 12 years of tax. So who is actually benefiting from all this?
Even majority of the BN politicians are not questioning about the environmental impact of Lynas. Why aren't there politicians and influential people trying to save their homes and the homes of thousands of species of animals, most yet to be found?
After all, we Malaysians want this corporation to be stopped because we treasure our home and we do not want it to become the RADIOACTIVE WASTE DUMPING CAPITAL of South East Asia!
