Ban local councils from using rip-off hotlines for motorist fines

A government watchdog has found that many councils are failing to adequately explain motorist's rights to them, meaning unfair fines being paid instead of challenged. Shockingly, some councils are also using premium rate phonelines to collect payments.

For anyone already struggling financially, fines can be an additional burden that is hard to manage. Expensive phonelines and lack of information impact those who can afford it least.

Not every fine issued is fair or correct, and motorists have the right to challenge them. It is currently legal for local councils to exploit motorists with additional phone charges and lack of information. We need to demand that the government protect our rights.

Join us in signing this petition to tell the government to crack down on local councils who neglect those hit with parking fines. We demand that phonelines for paying fines charge no more than a local call rate, and that they provide the option to query fines. Together we can fight for a fairer system for parking fines!

The Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government:

Local UK councils need to be held accountable for how they deal with parking fines. We demand an end to premium rate phonelines and witholding information about rights to appeal.

Please make it compulsory for local councils to operate affordable phonelines at no more than a local call rate, with the option to query the fine.
