Petition to Change the Running Hours of the Light Rail in Az

Target:
Councilman Tom Simplot, Mayor Hugh Hallman, Vice Mayor Kyle Jones, Mayor Elaine Scruggs, Mayor Bob Barrett , and Mayor Mary Manross.
Sponsored by:
The hours of service, as stated on Valley Metros website for the light rail are as follows:

Weekdays
Hours. Trains begin the first full trip of the day at 4:40 a.m. at the end-of-the-line stations. The last full trip of the day begins at 11 p.m., arriving at the opposite end of the line at midnight.
Frequency. Trains arrive every 10 minutes from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.; all other hours, every 20 minutes.

Weekends and holidays
Trains begin the first full trip of the day at 5 a.m. at the end-of-the-line stations. The last full trip of the day begins at 11 p.m., arriving at the opposite end of the line at midnight.  Frequency. Trains arrive every 15 minutes between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.; all other hours, every 20 minutes.

With the large scale crack down on DUI's in the state of Arizona over the past years, you would think that Arizona would provide light rail services to the public after 2am when bars close.  At the very least, it is a service that should be provided on the weekends, if not every evening/morning.

While I am not an expert on the matter, there are only three groups of people that I see benefitting from the light rail being closed from 12am-4:40/5am.

1) Cab drivers
2) The state of Arizona
3) Lawyers

Some cab drivers would petition against the light rail being open between these hours because it would cut down on the fare's they collect at night.  Keep in mind that the majority of individuals will still require cab service from the closest light rail station to their residences, back to said residence.

The state of Arizona preaches against the dangers of drunk driving, and spends our hard earned tax dollars on marketing against it via billboards, commercial spots, road signs to name a few.  They do this, yet fail to provide a service that would more than likely drastically cut down the number of DUI's given out each year.  However in turn, this would drastically cut back on the revenue brought in each year from DUI's.  Coincidence?

Lawyers that specialize in DUI law would of course lobby against the light rail operating during these hours because they make their living off of the hope that you will indeed get behind the wheel of your car each night that you drink, and drive home.

I firmly believe that as tax payers we should have a say in deciding what the operating hours of the new light rail are.  I think it only logical that the last run begin at 2:30am so that everyone across the valley have the ability to ride the light rail home for a fraction of the price of a cab ride.

Tell our officials we want OUR light rail to run at later hours.

The light rail is fantastic, however, the short hours on weekends not only inhibit it's use, but the growth of areas like downtown Phoenix.

Running the light rail later would significantly reduce the likelihood that bar patrons would drive while under the influence.

Please help move Phoenix into feeling like a REAL City! There are so many attractions and in the ages of "going Green" this is a better solution. The light rail is already so packed i've been unable to get on a few times. Plus this will REDUCE DUI's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The bars close at 2am. DUH!!!

Would be great if hours were extended that way when events are going on we dont have to rush into that traffic. Tempe Beach Park, Downtown Phoenix are very bad when concerts and events are going on and I can assure you most of them are barely ending by 11:00 pm for instance concerts going on on the 4th of April at Tempe Beach Park

I am someone who would benefit from the hours of lightrail going later into the early morning hours on the weekends especially. I do support the restuarants and entertainment venues in downtown Phoenix, and even recently choose to drive in stead of light rail because of the need to depart downtown by 11:30. Pleas extend the hours to help us fully utilize the light rail which has already cost the tax payers so much. Makes good sense I think. Sincerely,

I think that there would be more revenue for the light rail if you kept it running later, I know I would use it more.

Yes, please. It does not even make sense that it closes before the bars do. I thought it was supposed to give people options so we can get the DUI rate down here.

Given AZ's tough stance on DUI's I feel it is irresponsible to not extend Light Rail service past last call. Even if there were a "Night Owl" train that ran from 1:30am-2:30am (with service suspended between 11pm and 1:30am), it would help. An increased fare could be charged for the Night Owl, and Valley Metro would surely see profits soar.

Living only two blocks away from one lightrail stop, I would regularly use the lightrail if it were open later, especially on the weekends. I always think about using it when visiting friends, going to dinner/movies, or attending a concert, but I never do because service hours end before I plan on going home. Please extend light rail hours on Fridays and Saturdays. This will greatly encourage more people to use this great service!

I have been a strog supporter of light rail all along. I love that the dream is now a reality. However, shutting it down at 11 pm expecially on weekends is a disservice. We need that alterative transprotation for people who are out and those who have been drinking. Please reconsider. Michael

This would ensure safer roads when the bars let out. It would be healthier for environment and encourage walking!

we need the light rail open longer to cut down drunk driving!

I can think of several industries that would be well served with the later running service: medical, security (airport and other), legal, etc.

I agree 100 percent on the hours being extended. I do realize that a few groups may be affected such as lawyers but in reality more people woud benefit short, the State from the extended hours. The State would be making revenue off the Light Rail and the Citizens of our State would not be at such risk due to drunk drivers. Less deaths, means more people paying taxes so I see it as a win-win for everyone, even the State.

The light rail is meant ot be enjoyed by all. By expanding the hours you can increase the amount of usage and ferry more business to entertainment locales along the light rail path. I think this will do a lot for Phoenix culturally, and could also reduce DUIs.

Lets not completely focus on having to drive from local watering holes...all working people that have had to find additional income in these trying times also may be looking for a safe, convenient way to return home after what may be considered the "normal" working day has ended.

We, the people of Phoenix, paid for this sytstem that has many flaws, the biggest one is stopping at stop lights. We all know how much Vengence Joe Arpio LOVES the revenue drunk drivers brings into his system. However he SHOULD be focusing more of his efforts on the illegals and protecting our BORDERS. If the train begam it's last trip at 2:30am, ol' Joe wold be able to focus more on the border issues. Not to mention the courts and jails are already jammed with much more important issues: rape, burglary, murder, child molestation, just to name a few. However public safety should come FIRST, before Joe's revenue and

I would hope the city would choose saving lives by taking drunk drivers off the road instead of counting on the revenue produced from DUI's in the state. This is a question of morality here...

I think the light rail should increase hours of operation to get people off the roads after the bars are closed. Also should not increase the price. It won't do any good to anyone to have it sitting instead of running because the price was too high.
