With the large scale crack down on DUI's in the state of Arizona over the past years, you would think that Arizona would provide light rail services to the public after 2am when bars close. At the very least, it is a service that should be provided on the weekends, if not every evening/morning.
While I am not an expert on the matter, there are only three groups of people that I see benefitting from the light rail being closed from 12am-4:40/5am.
1) Cab drivers
2) The state of Arizona
3) Lawyers
Some cab drivers would petition against the light rail being open between these hours because it would cut down on the fare's they collect at night. Keep in mind that the majority of individuals will still require cab service from the closest light rail station to their residences, back to said residence.
The state of Arizona preaches against the dangers of drunk driving, and spends our hard earned tax dollars on marketing against it via billboards, commercial spots, road signs to name a few. They do this, yet fail to provide a service that would more than likely drastically cut down the number of DUI's given out each year. However in turn, this would drastically cut back on the revenue brought in each year from DUI's. Coincidence?
Lawyers that specialize in DUI law would of course lobby against the light rail operating during these hours because they make their living off of the hope that you will indeed get behind the wheel of your car each night that you drink, and drive home.
I firmly believe that as tax payers we should have a say in deciding what the operating hours of the new light rail are. I think it only logical that the last run begin at 2:30am so that everyone across the valley have the ability to ride the light rail home for a fraction of the price of a cab ride.
Tell our officials we want OUR light rail to run at later hours.
