SAVE over 300 Towering Trees on Old Growth Forest Soil by 3/24, in Tucker, Georgia

  • by: Sandi Lampiris
  • recipient: Six Dekalb County Commissioners voting in Decatur, Georgia, March 24, 6:30 p.m.
Residents & friends of Winding Woods neighborhood and others Protecting 100ft Trees,
1. DO NOT OPPOSE RE-DEVELOPMENT of an 18.47 acre Atlanta Office Park into a 200,000 sq foot Retail Strip Mall with mega box stores, but we…

2. DO OPPOSE REZONING a majestic 2.69 acre woods fm Residential R-85 buffer to Office/Industrial allowing the developer to remove up to 70% of 100 foot hardwoods including 100 year old White Oaks with life spans of 500 yrs that future generations could appreciate. And we resolutely oppose allowing a developer to build a mega BOX STORE 2.5 football fields wide as close as 70feet behind a residential subdivision. Sunsets will be blocked, hundreds of majestic trees will come down, remaining trees may also die in the 30ft strip of woods due to damaged roots and soil compaction, the Arborist says. We therefore propose a...
3. COMPROMISE. With the developer's plan, MORE than 300 trees on Old Growth Soil would be cut unnecessarily - including 100yr old White & Red Oaks - when only 30 ADDITIONAL UNDISTURBED FEET OF WOODS can be the compromise. We ask Commissioners to grant a 60ft undisturbed woods zone (vs only 30ft) and set back the giant box store to 100ft behind residential property lines (vs only 70ft). Thus Commissioners preserve over 60% of the hardwood forest (vs only 30%) that FUTURE GENERATIONS can enjoy for 500 years. Commissioners create a win/win for the developer can disturb 40% of woods (vs 70%), one-story ranch house owners have increased buffer to block mega store 100ft away, county collects taxes, CID has destination for pedestrians, developer has track record to continue developing in Tucker, Georgia, Commissioners generate happy votes from hundreds of homeowners, etc.

In exchange, we will support rezoning of the entire 100ft R-85 wooded buffer to O&I.
Specifically, we support rezoning the entire 100 foot R-85 wooded buffer to O&I under these conditions:
Preserve a minimum of 60ft as undisturbed in the 100ft essential tree buffer. (vs 30ft)
Move Hobby Lobby’s east building side to 100foot setback fm residential properties. (vs 70ft)
Allow the remaining 40 feet of woods to be disturbed. (developer wants 70ft)
Allow 15 feet (of the remaining 40ft woods) to be disturbed, fenced, replanted.
Allow final 25 ft (of the100ft woods) for service drive.
