Stray Dogs and Cats Don't Belong in Hot, Dark Shelters

For years, the city of Ellisville's only animal shelter was a tiny holding facility that lost and stray pets in hot, dark and uncomfortable conditions. After five days -- barely any time to be adopted or reunited with their owners -- the dogs and cats would be euthanized.

The city of Ellisville has finally closed down this grim facility. But now, Mayor Tim Waldrup has no plan for dealing with lost and stray pets, and does not want to spent taxpayer dollars to build a suitable facility.

Southern Cross Animal Rescue met with city officials and the mayor and offered to run a humane animal shelter that would include adoptions. Dr. Kimberly Martin, a vet who was in charge of euthanizing pets from the old facility, has also been helping out at her own expense by adopting out most of the pets to her staff and clients rather than euthanizing them. But the mayor still won' t budge.

The mayor clearly has lots of support from animal lovers who are willing to work together to make a humane animal shelter possible. Please sign the petition to urge Tim Waldrup to prioritize a proper plan for dealing with lost and stray animals.

We, the undersigned, are pleased that the city of Ellisville finally demolished the small animal holding facility that kept lost and stray pets in hot, dark and uncomfortable conditions for five days with little hope of being adopted or reunited with their owners. However, we are still concerned with the lack of a concrete plan for dealing with stray and lost pets in a humane manner.

As you know, Southern Cross Animal Rescue met with city officials and offered to run a humane animal shelter that would include adoptions. Dr. Kimberly Martin, a vet who was in charge of euthanizing pets from the old facility, has also been helping out at her own expense by adopting out most of the pets to her staff and clients rather than euthanizing them.

We believe that there is clear and abundant support from animal lovers who are willing to work together for to make a humane animal shelter possible. We respectfully urge you to prioritize a proper plan for dealing with lost and stray animals. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
