Congress: Block Anti-Environment, Pro-Business Trans Pacific Free Trade Agreement!

Big business - the 1% - wants Congress to give the President fast-track authority to quickly push through new free trade agreements through Congress. This is not only unfair, it might even be unconstitutional, and it is up, regular people and the environment who will suffer.

We’ve been through this before. In the early 90s, NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement between Canada, the United States, and Mexico, was fast-tracked. Despite promises of prosperity, it was a disaster. Thousands of American job went south, while countless Mexican farmers were pushed into poverty after they found they could not compete with subsidized cheap American produce. The only ones who won? Big manufacturers who could use cheap labor abroad and abandon American workers, and big-agribusiness profiting off the growing poverty in rural Mexico.

This could be even worse. The Trans-Pacific Partnership will bring more of the same with even worse environmental consequences at a time when we need to coming together to fight climate change. According to Wikileaks:

if the trade pact's final environmental chapter looks like [the leaked version, it would make the Obama administration's environmental trade record "worse than George W. Bush’s," said Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club. “This draft chapter falls flat on every single one of our issues -- oceans, fish, wildlife, and forest protections -- and in fact, rolls back on the progress made in past free trade pacts.”

In the end, big corporations will profit while the rest of us - Americans, Asians, Latinos, not to mention animals and clean air - will see no benefits at all.

Call on Congress to refuse fast track authority for free trade agreements, to push for environmental protections, and respect the rights of ordinary citizens all around the world over those of big business. We want fair trade and an clean, green earth, not free trade and unlimited pollution!

Dear Honorable Member of Congress,

Trade can be good - but unrestricted, unfair free trade can hurt regular people. That is why I am so concerned about Congress giving fast track authority over the upcoming Trans Pacific Partnership. The environmental consequences could alone be grave. We need to have a open debate about the effects of free trade on our economy. We don't want another NAFTA.

Please oppose giving fast track authority to the TPP.

Not much news about TPP? This is why

"The TPP is being negotiated in secret. What we know comes from leaks, which show that the TPP would let corporations sue countries in international courts over regulations that they don’t like and it would gut US enviro and financial rules. The media should be informing us about TPP. The problem: almost no one in the media is talking about it."
