Stop Killing Giraffes for Fun

Tourists from mostly America, Germany, Russia and Scandanavia pay as much as $15,000 to kill giraffes for fun or trophies. Some make a family vacation out of it.

But not all pay extra for head trophies to mount on their walls; some settle for photos of them smiling, posing proudly with their slaughtered victims.

With the giraffe population declining seriously since 1988, most countries have banned giraffe hunting, but Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa continue to allow hunting firms to profit from these trophy killings.

Spokesmen for these businesses and even for the Giraffe Conservation Foundation support the hunts, claiming they fund wildlife conservation and help to increase animal populations where government-regulated hunts are allowed.

However, others say hunting giraffes encourages poaching elsewhere, and still others are appalled at the "extreme selfishness" of killing these gentle giants just for show.

Tell these three countries to stop allowing giraffe trophy killings.
We, the undersigned, feel that the slaughtering of giraffes for sport is as one critic described it, enormously selfish, and we add incredibly atrocious.

We understand that your countries rely heavily on tourism to boost your economies, however, slaughtering innocent animals is not the answer. Perhaps you would find other tourists willing to visit to see and be with the animals if you'd stop allowing their slaughter for sport.  Also, with some giraffes now extinct in some countries, why are you allowing them to be hunted down for sport in yours?

We cannot confirm or negate the claims that allowing legal hunting increases animal populations, however we believe there is merit in the argument that allowing legal hunting of giraffes will encourage illegal poaching.

Whatever your reasons for allowing tourists to selfishly exploit this gentle giant, we are signing on to say we do not agree with the practice and we request you ban it at once.

Thank you for your attention to our concerns.
