Canadians for a National Housing Policy

  • by: Justin Johnson
  • recipient: Canadian Federal Government (Prime Minister Stephen Harper)

Today there are over 3.2 Million Canadians without a safe, decent, and affordable place to live. While many cities across Canada are pursuing different strategies for addressing the affordable housing dilemma, most observers agree that national funding is the primary barrier to the issue. The team at Spence Magazine needs your help to send Prime Minister Harper a message to push the Federal Government to create a national housing strategy.

For those who lack a safe, decent and affordable place to live the impact can be devastating:

  • Health: Children with inadequate housing have an increased risk of slow growth and are 10 times more likely to contract meningitis, respiratory problems or asthma. Numerous research reports funded by the Wellesley Institute and others point to a good home as one of the most important determinants of health.
  • Education: Children living in overcrowded or toxic conditions are less likely to graduate from high school.
  • Employment: Children who live in inadequate housing have lower educational attainment and a greater likelihood of being impoverished and unemployed as adults.

We are asking Canadians to join together and help raise awareness about the Canadian national housing crisis. You can help make a difference on the national housing crisis in Canada by doing the following:

  • Please sign our petition on Care2 and join other petitioners who are at the forefront of making an impact on the housing crisis in Canada.
  • Read and share Spence Magazine's story on the housing crisis that is available on the Spence News Magazine ITunes App. We are contributing 99 cents from every download to the Wellesley Institute and Habitat For Humanity. Our goal is to raise a minimum of $5,000 for these organizations.

Adding your voice to this issue will help raise even more coverage and understanding of the housing issues that impact the future of 3.2 Million Canadians.

Dear Prime Minister Harper,

I'm writing to ask you to take a stand on the national housing crisis in Canada. Today there are over 3.2 Million Canadians without a safe, decent, and affordable place to live. The issue of not having adequate housing for all Canadians is important because for those who lack a safe, decent and affordable place to live the impact can be devastating:

  • Health: Children with inadequate housing have an increased risk of slow growth and are 10 times more likely to contract meningitis, respiratory problems or asthma. Numerous research reports funded by the Wellesley Institute and others point to a good home as one of the most important determinants of health.

  • Education: Children living in overcrowded or toxic conditions are less likely to graduate from high school.

  • Employment: Children who live in inadequate housing have lower educational attainment and a greater likelihood of being impoverished and unemployed as adults.

Prime Minister Harper, I'm writing you today to ask that you Introduce a Bill in the House of Commons that would address the national housing crisis in Canada.

Sincerely,
