Better Treatment for G&T Students in Schools

Gifted and Talented students in public schools, especially in New York City, are struggling every day, between the outrageous amounts of homework and the pressure of grades at school.
Statewide testing recently occurred for third to fifth graders in NYC and man, was it brutal. They all know the tests are to gauge how well the teachers are doing, not them, but they're scared their teachers will be angry if they get questions wrong. The teachers pressure then into getting every question right and leaving no mistakes. School is supposed to be a place where you try something, make mistakes, learn from them, and get better. So it really isn't fair that the teachers get away with punishing students when they fail a test or get a wrong answer.I
Another thing that makes school hard for kids is because they work, work, work all day and some schools don't even offer a half hour of recess. Many schools don't have playgrounds or grassy areas for kids to play in, but rather fifty square feet of asphalt as their "recess yard". I know for a fact that a couple schools give only twenty minutes of recess, and thirty-five as rare rewards that are given maybe once a year. Students need the excersise time, not to mention the well-deserved break from lessons.
A study about the harmful effects of heavy backpacks showed that of 3500 middle schoolers, 64% said that they had been experiencing neck, shoulder and back pain as a result of too much homework, too many books, and just too much SCHOOL on their backs. Two in every five children said they were experiencing pain while wearing their backpacks. An estimated 16% said they had had to miss class, gym, or recess time because of severe upper body pans caused by heavy backpacks. The article "Heavy Backpacks Can Hurt" says that to avoid this kind of pain, students should consider a rolling suitcase backpack so that they do not have to carry the load on their backs. But many schools do not even allow these types of backpacks because they can cause you to clog up hallways whenever you need to go up stairs. Schoolwork is literally a pain in the neck.
Many schools have good teachers. These kinds of teachers are nice. They're funny, they crack jokes, they talk to each student and they help them learn better. Then there are all the other teachers. These teachers are just awful. They tease the students who get the wrong answers and publicly humiliate those who don't understand the topic. They make it harder for everyone, and you don't even learn what you cane there to learn.
The worst part is, the teachers are paid to do this. They come in to class, ready to crack down on kids and damage their self-esteem, and get paid for it. Students are FORCED BY THE LAW OF NYC to sit there, endure it, and say "Yes sir" or "Yes Ma'am" and then go back to work, silent tears staining their faces.
This is important. Things are pretty bad at many accelerated education NYC schools. Please sign this petition so we can end the injustice that is being performed upon these students. Think of how these kids would feel if school became the place they advertised on TV and in picture books. As a public school student myself, I know how bad it is, and how bad it will be if nothing is done today.
