On Tuesday, July 30th, police chased and fatally shot Hans Arellano in Santa Ana, California, for no apparent reason in the middle of the afternoon. He was unarmed, just 22 years old, and the father of two.
According to friends, Arellano was in the process of turning his life around, taking steps to become a better father and to get off the streets. There is no clue to why he was shot that day, and already, police are closing off outsiders from investigations.
It matters to everyone when police violence against minorities, the homeless, and youth, goes unanswered. People like Arellano or his family don’t have the resources to hire expensive lawyers, lobbyists, nor get fair access in a rigged justice system.
If we don’t put pressure on state officials in California now, we may never learn the truth about what happened that day.
