Urgent! We need your help to protect the Harbor Seal Rookery in La Jolla, CA from Human Harassment!

  • recipient: We are petitioning the California Coastal Commission to Save the Year-Round Rope at Casa Beach, La Jolla, CA.

The Harbor Seal Rookery on Casa Beach in La Jolla is located in a highly urbanized setting. Consequently, while the seals are wild animals in their natural habitat, people seem to think it is a petting zoo. They get close to the seals for a photo shot, even encourage their children to touch a seal. Harbor seals are extremely shy and afraid of people. When visitors get too close, they stampede off the beach into the water. The seals need to rest on the beach to re-oxygenate, rewarm, molt (shed their fur), give birth, nurse, and raise their pups. If they do not get sufficient rest, stress and malnutrition may occur as well as an increase in stillborn and premature births. In addition, mother seals may abandon their pups when scared off the beach, which results in pup mortality.

The Year-Round Rope protects the seals by giving a clear message to visitors to stay behind the rope when viewing the seals.

The California Coastal Commission is meeting in June to approve the Rope.

By signing this petition, you agree to support the City of San Diego's application to keep the guideline rope up at Casa Beach from May 15 to December 15 annually (CCC file #6-15-0223).
