Thousands of badgers will be shot in England in the autmn of 2012, due to amount of cattle being slaughtered because of the spread of Tuberculosis by badgers. Free running badgers will be shot in two piloted areas, which will be made public. The results will be assesed by an independent panel before deciding to start 10 trails in a year, each of which would run for four years.
TB is a deadly disease, HOWEVER barbarically shooting these poor animals should not be the case and a more badger friendly approach would be much more effecient. Professer and scientest John Krebs said that the data had showed culling badgers was completely ineffecient and Rosie Woodroffe, a badger ecologist at the institute of zoology in London and who worked for a decade on the largest ever UK study of badger culling has said that ''The culling is expected to achieve at best a 16% reduction in cattle TB''.
A vaccination against tubercolosis in cattle would be much more efficient and probably tackle the disease better. Whilst one is yet to be developed, DEFRA are concentrating significant resources on the research and development of an effective vaccine. Wales, has recently announced that a badger cull there to help control bovine TB, has been dropped in replace of a vaccination. Please help persaude the British Government to do the exact same thing and drop a planned badger cull, by signing this petition.
So please, if you would like to save these amazing creatures and provide a friendly vaccination against TB then please sign this petition to Department for Environment, food and rural affairs in England, persauding to approach and tackle the disease with a badger and cattle friendly vaccination. Remember, every signature COUNTS.
We the undersigned, are here today, to help persaude the honourable Department for environment, food and rural affairs to abandon the plans to shoot and cull badgers in England against tubercolosis.
We all feel very strongly that this cull will be completely inefficient and could even make the TB situation worse, as badgers could get injured if shot and move to other places in England where TB is not a problem and the disease could be spread in that town, city or rural area. We strongly advise DEFRA to use a vaccination in cattle against TB. We also feel that this cull will not be science lead nor very efficient for wildlife.
We thank you for taking the time to read this letter and we hope that friendly vaccinations can be bought into place to help eradicate TB, instead of barbaric shoots and culls.
