In between the years of 1979 and 1989, African Elephants were hunted and killed to dangerously low levels for ivory. Poachers then cut the African Elephants population numbers down by at least 50%. In the year of 1977 1.3 million elephants lived in Africa; by 1997, only 600,000 remained.
Even though it's illegal to kill the Elephants in Africa these days, people still continue to kill them. These beautiful creatures are important to this planet and it would be a nightmare to see them die out!

If every shop everywhere stopped selling Ivory there wouldnt be such a demand for their tusks,and the fact that Zimbabwe recently paid for a ship load of weapons from China with tons of Ivory doesnt help the Elephant any either, the problem is stopping the people who want to buy the Ivory,they are offering big money for tusks and some people will do anything for money. If people are starving they also will do anything for money.
