Save the Reindeer!

Reindeer might seem to be cropping up everywhere during the holidays, but a new study in The Journal of Nature Conservation shows that their worldwide populations have been declining all over the world. In China, the reindeer population has declined by 40 percent over the past four decades.

Scientists have identified several different reasons for their decline, including inbreeding (due to the species' small, isolated populations) and poaching for antlers. Climate change and traffic accidents have also contributed significantly to reindeer deaths.

We cannot afford to lose this iconic species, yet they currently have few protections. Please sign the petition to urge the IUCN to upgrade reindeer on their Red List to afford them greater protections, particularly in China where the species has seen the greatest decline.
