Petition to define Coal Ash as a Hazardous Waste

Target:
Environmental Protection Agency
This petition is to ask the Environmental Protection Agency to label Coal Ash as Hazardous Waste. Many of the heavy metals in Coal Ash are already labeled as Hazardous Waste because it has been proven that some of these ingredients are dangerous to our health and can cause many forms of impairment and possibly cause death. It would only make sense to label the waste that contains Hazardous Waste as Hazardous Waste also.

It would only make sense to label the waste that contains Hazardous Waste as Hazardous Waste also.
We the undersigned, ask  that  you, as the Environmental Protection Agency, change the Label of Coal Ash to Hazardous Waste. There are many ingredients in Coal Ash that are already labeled as Hazardous Waste because they contain dangerous heavy metals that can impair the human body or even cause death to the human body. we feel that something that is this dangerous should be classified as Hazardous Waste and we ask that you please do so.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and to hopefully change the classification of Coal Ash.

My husband hauls coal ash in Kentucky. He has been sick and tired (extremely) since he started about two months ago. When he is off the job for a few days, he feels better. I strongly believe that the coal ash dust that he is breathing is making him sick. This STUFF IS HAZARDOUS TO OUR HEALTH!!!

It is time to do the right thing in all areas and consider the citizens of this country as our responsibility and our sisters and brothers. In doing so, issues like this do not become a discussion, but an obligation. Denise

These people that claim they are sick now. Just wait. The long term effect of this will be deadly to our children, our children's children and our environment. The damage is done. There is no Fix. This is a man made disaster that should have never happened.

I live next to the coal ash spill, it is a few hundred feet from my property where my family and our pets live. We have head aches, dizziness, stomach pain, coughing and vomiting. My house is coated with coal ash and I can only assume so are our lungs. We need coal ash labeled with truth so it can be treated accordingly and people don't suffer because of political agendas...for the love of God this is 2009 it's time to admit coal ash is dangerous!

As an RN, and professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee, I believe this disaster is comparable to Chernobyl. C ancers, asthma, neutoxocities from heavy metals, and chronic obstructive lung disease are just a few health problems already evident. The EPA FEMA and Obama need to know this is a major national disaster, and this is turning into another Katrina. Wake up! Joanne M Hall, PhD, RN FAAN

The regulation of coal ash is only one of many issues that need increased awareness and regulation. To find out more about what the local industries are doing in your backyard get involved with your local community and city government action groups. It's time for us to spend more time listening, looking and making changes.

Coal ash is hazardous to the long term health of both our citizens and animals. It is time that the EPA recognizes it and does what it is mandated to do, protect the environment, not turn the other cheek because coal companies are richer than the inhabitants than live near the mines.

The hazards along the coal chain of events from extraction to transport to burning to coal waste disposal have been downplayed long enough. Coal combustion waste is a hazardous material! Mountaintop removal mining destroys watersheds! Heavy metals and CO2 emissions from coal power plants are poisoning us, and future generations! Even if we can achieve zero emissions, we will always have coal ash. Other hazards of coal mining will continue to destroy coalfield citizens and communities, from the sacred lands of the Hopi and Navajo in the West to the Appalachians in the East. The hazards of coal are like Voldemort, and it's time that we, the people, demand that EPA, OSM and other agencies bring the truths of human suffering into the language of regulation and out of the realms of that which "must not be named."

I have been fighting this issue for the last 3 years in my town. We have 2 CCW dumps in town and the Mass DEP is completely uninterested in listening or providing proper monitoring. They are living in the "Dark Ages" when it comes to fly ash issues. All they want to do is have you go away. Look at the EPA's track record on this. They have avoided it since the 1990's. It is irresponsible and unacceptable. Utilities have the EPA in a holding pattern. Each metal in CCW is a hazardous material, yet combined they present no threat according to the EPA and Utility lobbiest. Incredible!

Because peoples' lives have been uprooted, Because their Liberty to live in their own home has been infringed, Because their Pursuit of Happiness has been impaired. Because of these things that we hold self-evident, we demand that any time 4 Million tons of anything can fall on us, that it be regulated!
