Don't Kill the Liger found in Indonesia

  • by: Nyack Clancy
  • recipient: Aman Sujiaman, the West Java Natural Resources Conservation Agency

Among 13 endangered animals found at a West Java luxury villa while investigating a murder scene, was a liger- whose future remains uncertain.

The other animals will be put in a conservation institution in Gadog, Bogor with the to plan to release most of the animals into the wild. The liger, (the hybrid offspring of a male lion and a tigress), would not occur naturally in the wild since lions and tigers do not exist in the same areas. They are bred in captivity for public amusement.

“The presence of a new animal is not due to a natural cause and it was because of human intervention,” said Aman Sujiaman, a member of the West Java Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA). “There are no regulations on it, so we would suggest for the liger found here to be terminated.”

Tell Aman Sujiaman not to kill the liger just because it does not have the protections of an endangered species. There must be an alternative, humane solution besides death for the animal. Another solution would be to ban ligers from entering, or being bred in Indonesia.
