Please sign and share this petition worldwide in an effort to save the starlings from drinking sewer and other contaminated waters that is affecting their health and well-being. Sewers contain many dangerous substances to the birds including antidepressants like Prozac. We need to encourage government officials to monitor these situations and create a way where the birds would not gain access to such contaminated waters such as sewers.

Experts have been alerted to the dangers that many birds are facing like the starling when trying to survive and multiply in their natural habitats. Many of them feed at the sewage works where they find very healthy, plump worms that contains some levels of Prozac from human waste. Such practices by these birds affects not only their eating habits but their interest in mating. Birds are drawn to these areas to feed because they are attracted by all the worms and invertebrates that live there.

It is unbelievable what exist in those sewer waters such as prescription meds, headache pills and anti-depressants that are not being used by the body; they are often excreted completely unchanged. Studies have been conducted on starling in captivity with water containing some of these substances. The experts say that “The major finding was a loss of appetite. Compared with the control birds who hadn’t had any Prozac, they ate much less and snacked throughout the day. The problem then is that they’re less likely to survive long, dark winter’s nights.”

The birds in the study lost the desire to eat or mate which can be harmful to their existence and endangerment. There has also been notable behavioral changes in the starlings. It is also a fact that more than 50 million starlings in the UK alone have lost their lives since the 1960s. The next step of the study is tolook at wild starlings to check if they also have chemical residue in their bodies. An expert stated that “Science needs to deliver better estimates of the environmental risks posed by pharmaceuticals. The effects we’ve measured so far are quite subtle. If this situation is not studied and monitored, it will only get worse. We need to get a handle on it!"

We are asking these scientists, experts and the government to "get a handle on it" and step up their game to save birds like the starlings. Keep a close monitor of these sewers and develop a plan that will not put any birds in danger. U. S. Federal Environment Agency, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's - Please step up your studies and investigations regarding the effects of sewer waters on birds like the starlings that favor these areas to feed. Monitor these areas and develop a plan that will protect the birds, whether has to do with purifying the waters before they exit the sewage plants or confining these areas from access by any birds. Continue with your studies and closely monitor the situation while contemplating a plan that will protect the birds. Don't put these birds in continual danger!
