For the safety and health of our children in North Carolina, we should make it illegal for the driver or any occupant to smoke in any vehicle while a minor is present. The health risks to a growing, minor child are extensive - bronchitis, asthma, ADHD, life long respiratory issues, etc.
It is illegal to smoke in schools, restaurants, colleges, etc. but not illegal to smoke in a car (the most confined space most children find themselves) with a child.
Dear Friends,
I think North Carolina has made great strides in the rights of NonSmokers. I think we can go one better though and make it illegal to smoke in a vehicle with a minor present.
Picture this, someone can get pulled over for not properly restraining their child in a car seat or restraining a child in a car seat that does not meet regulations. While the officer is writing the citation for child endangerment, it is perfectly legal for every adult in the car to be smoking a cigarette. Something is wrong with this picture to me and I want to do something about it.
The health risks of second hand smoke exposure is extensive in adults; it is only compounded and becomes a lifetime health concern to children. Smoking is a choice that becomes an addiction but children don’t get that choice. They can be strapped in chairs and have no choice but to be exposed to this on a constant and daily basis.
This petition is just one step of many in the process and I would so appreciate your help. 10,000 signatures is a tall order but I’ve had taller and I know we can do this together!
Please help me make this a reality for our children!
Many thanks,
Fran Stacks
