During Trump's arraignment in early April, Judge Juan Manuel Merchan warned Trump to stop making statements about the case which could endanger public safety or make it more difficult to hold a fair trial. He said at the time that a gag order was premature, but that if Trump continued, he would have to take a closer look.
It's time for that closer look. Trump has continued making his statements on social media and elsewhere, including direct attacks on the Judge himself. He is putting public safety at risk, and he is clearly trying to taint the jury pool.
Any other criminal defendant in a similar situation would likely already be under a gag order, and likely be held in contempt. Trump is not above the law, and he should be treated the same, with reasonable restrictions specific to this case.
