Improve the Animal Welfare Act 2002 in WA

Animal Cruelty negatively effects society. Innocent animals are harmed and the people who harmed them may even go on to hurt others. Also organisations with animals effected by cruelty have less resources since they have more animals to look after. More resources have to be bought and this adds an expense, there is also less space for animals that haven’t been purposely hurt and due to this lack of space animals can be euthanized.

If animal cruelty laws are improved Australia will become a better place, with animals able to be safe.

Examples of Recent Cases of Animal Cruelty

In Wilson, on November 8, 2012 Chin Wei Shing was found guilty of beating a female Shih-Tzu ‘Cookie’ to death. Mr. Shing was charged with a $7 500 fine and a 5 year ban of owning an animal.

Another case is of John William Connell. Who on February 2, 2011 in Beckenham used his own dogs to torture and kill a kitten. Mr. Connell was charged $20 000, he was not banned from owning an animal but is banned from raising guide dogs, which he was a volunteer for.

I believe these fines and bans should be increased. Mr. Chin had beaten this innocent Shih-Tzu to death, therefore I believe that he should have a life ban on owning an animal and a greater fine, even a jail term. Mr. Connell, I believe should have had his dogs taken away from him, he had used them to aid him in the killing of the kitten and wasn’t a responsible pet owner.
