IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED: Ask Lake Vista Officials to Halt Goose Massacre

  • by: Lynn Hudson
  • recipient: Lake Vista Manager Chris Falwell, Leigh Doyle, and Lake Vista Property Owners Association, Bedford County, Virginia

Lake Vista, a neighborhood in Bedford County, Virginia has asked the USDA to capture wild Canada Geese on the lake and have them slaughtered "like any Perdue chicken".  While terrifying and harrowing for any animal, this is an EXCEEDINGLY cruel method of wild bird control.  In the coming days, when wild geese are FLIGHTLESS because of molt, these utterly defenseless geese will be baited, grabbed by the legs, flung into crates, and transported long distances in trucks with loud noises, vibrations and in close proximity to humans.  With no means of escape, the terror experienced by these sensitive animals will be unimaginable. It is possible the babies will be left entirely defenseless while their mothers are hauled away.

These initiatives are also wholly ineffective since more birds will simply fly in to use available resources.  The neighborhood's governing body has been asked to forgo this cruel, unnecessary cull in favor of humane and proven effective measures but they refuse to listen.

Many, many residents of Lake Vista are trying to save the geese from being tortured and slaughtered but the "few" on the Property Owners Assocation are determined to have their own way.

Please sign this Petition and let Lake Vista Property Owners Association and Chris Falwell, the manager of Lake Vista, know that what they are doing to these wild, sensitive and innocent birds is NOT acceptable on any level when humane and proven effective measures have been proven to work in controlling geese populations on a lake.

THANK YOU...for the geese.

Dear Mr. Falwell, Leigh Doyle and Lake Vista Property Owners Association,

It has come to my attention that your Property Owners Association has contacted the USDA and hired a contractor to capture, transport and slaughter the wild geese at Lake Vista.  I am writing to respectfully ask you to rethink this manner of wild bird control.

There are many proven and effective HUMANE measures which can be implemented to control the geese population.  It is very disturbing that you would willingly and knowingly subject these beautiful, wild, and sensitive birds to such a horrific and cruel roundup and sanction their slaughter.

It is inconceivable to me that, when wild geese are FLIGHTLESS because of molt, these utterly defenseless geese will be baited, grabbed by the legs, flung into crates, and transported long distances in trucks with loud noises, vibrations and in close proximity to humans.  With no means of escape, the terror experienced by these sensitive animals will be unimaginable. It is possible the babies will be left entirely defenseless while their mothers are hauled away.  Many of the birds may very well die in transport due to the stress and not even make it to be slaughtered "like any Perdue chicken".

Again, long term, humane measures are available to you for controlling the geese at Lake VistaI respectfully ask that your board halt your plans to cull the geese and prevent unimaginable suffering for them.
