The safety of our children is at risk with the policy of centralized bus stops that has been established by the Lockport City School District board policy for the 2014-15 school year.

Many of the centralized pick up points for our children are in areas where there are no sidewalks, poor visibility and heavy traffic on the roads where the bus stops to pick the children up. The children are left with no other option but to stand in the middle of the street where they would be directly in the path of cars turning onto the road the children are standing on. In addition, the children are in the way of cars leaving the neighborhood.

The time of day that the children are standing unprotected in the middle of the street is at a point when traffic is at it's heaviest with people commuting to work in the mornings. In the winter, the build up of snow on both sides of the road lessens the area where the children must stand and wait.

THE POLICY OF CENTRALIZED BUS STOPS FOR ALL CHILDREN IN THE DISTRICT IS IRRESPONSIBLE, WRECKLESS AND THOUGHTLESS ON THE PART OF THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE THIS DECISION WITHOUT TAKING THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN INTO CONSIDERATION. THERE SHOULD BE A POLICY IN PLACE THAT BUSSES MUST GO INTO NEIGHBORHOODS WHERE THERE ARE NO SIDEWALKS FOR CHILDREN TO STAND ON WHILE WAITING FOR THE BUS.
