Say "Not in My Name" to Islamophobia

  • by: Helen Watts

Islamaphobic attacks are on the rise in the UK and Muslims are now living in fear in a less than equal society. Anyone could predict that the aftermath of the Paris Attacks would bring a renewed hatred towards Muslims from an ignorant section of society. To be honest, I don't blame these ignorant people (although they are of course responsible for their choice of actions), I blame the government and subsequently the media for inciting hatred towards Muslims day in and day out - the way Islam is depicted in the media is just not representative of Islam in any way, shape or form. There are billions of peaceful, law-abiding, friendly Muslims all over the world who have nothing to do with so-called Islamic State/ISIS/ISIL. When did we last see a story about the millions of pounds that Muslims donate to charities in the UK and around the world - in Islam it is a sin to show-off about any form of charity work because it loses its sincerity which is why you may not hear about it directly from themselves - but there's nothing stopping the media from finding some inspirational stories and reporting them.
After showing solidarity with France and sending his sympathies to Paris, the next task for the Prime Minister should have been to openly remind the British Public that this terrorism has nothing to do with ordinary Muslims and to warn them that anti-Muslim hate crime will not be tolerated. However, nothing of the sort has come to light. There are countless speeches about defending our country, but who is defending a key section of our society - our Muslim friends and neighbours. We are living in a society where oppression is a real issue for Muslims and they are experiencing prejudice daily - some of which is obvious and some of which even the perpetrators aren't even aware of, casual Islamophobia is becoming ingrained and starting to be an accepted norm. It is almost a given that Muslims are becoming the less favoured group in society and it has to stop.
