Demand Democratic Scrutiny of Top Secret US-EU Trade Deal (T.T.I.P)

At this very moment, an unelected but powerful group of corporations are negotiating a secret US-EU trade deal called T.T.I.P. This secret deal between the EU and the US will give corporations unmatched power and is a real threat to democracy.

T.T.I.P will allow corporations to sue governments (before secretive arbitration panels composed of corporate lawyers) when their future profits are being diminished by changes in your country's legislation. This mechanism could threaten almost any means by which governments might seek to defend their citizens or protect the natural world. 



It would mean that a country would have to pay compensation WITH your tax's payers money. They also target opportunities to implement regulations that benefit their various corporate activities. This means corporations will actually 'police' worker's rights, food safety labeling, affordable medicines, financial regulations, renewable energy policies, bans on toxins, patent standards, internet freedom etc.

This trade-deal is being negotiated in a completely undemocratic manner: by an unelected group of political representatives in Brussels and Washington. The public isn't being informed and it fundamentally undermines national sovereignty. Time is running out! The negotiations will be concluded at the end of 2014, early 2015.

• Demand that President Obama and US Congress informs and consults US Citizens on T.T.I.P.

• Demand that The EU Parliament brings T.T.I.P. into public scrutiny and democratic accountability.

• Demand that the EU’s National Governments informs and consults their citizens on T.T.I.P. and demand the right for a public referendum on this issue.

As for the claim that the trade deal will produce growth and jobs, this is also likely to be false. Barack Obama promised that the US-Korea Free Trade Agreement would increase US exports by $10bn. They immediately fell by $3.5bn. The 70,000 jobs it would deliver? Er, 40,000 were lost. Bill Clinton promised that the North American Free Trade Agreement would create 200,000 new jobs for the US; 680,000 went down the pan. As the commentator Glyn Moody says: "The benefits are slight and illusory, while the risks are very real."

T.T.I.P is not to be confused with T.P.P. They're both secret trade-deals but the first is a secret trade-deal between EU-US and the latter is a secret trade-deal between US-and 11 other 'Pacific Rim' countries. At the moment Pres. Obama is trying to fast track T.P.P.
