Give BART Employee Jim Stanek His Job Back!

BART recently fired an employee for showing compassion for a teenager in need.

A San Francisco 16-year old sure had a lot of strikes against him. He'd lost his father. His grades in public school had taken a nose dive. And the $11 for a round trip to the charter school where he was succeeding academically was too much for the young man's adoptive family. Who will stick up for somebody like that when the system lets him down?

Jim Stanek did. Stanek, a Bay Area Rapid Transit employee, saw a need and collected $300 in unused train tickets which he gave the young man to help him get to school. On May 1, BART fired Stanek.

Turns out BART considers Stanek's attempt to help a struggling teenager a crime.

If the transportation authority can't issue a travel scholarship to help a student in need, at least it can support Stanek's decision to help.  Tell BART that firing Stanek for showing compassion was wrong! Demand that they reinstate Stanek immediately.

We the undersigned understand that you consider Jim Stanek's gift of $300 in unused tickets a theft. But we ask you to carefully consider how the system failed to help a young man who had lost a parent and was struggling to get on his feet academically. Jim Stanek bravely stepped in and took action where others failed to do so.  He helped a young man get to school and improve his chances for the future. We're not asking you to give him a medal. But please let him keep his job.
