Save our native wild horses ~ Stop the Roundups

  • by: Protect Mustangs
  • recipient: United States Senate, United States House of Representatives, President Obama

America's wild horses are being harrassed and abused in roundups. The Department of Interior's Bureau of Land Management wants to sterilize them and dispose of them because they view them as vermin on the cattle's range. They and certain members of Congress have torn apart the Protection Act of 1971 . . . Now they can legally sell native wild horses to slaughter or just kill them.

We petition you classify America's wild horses, E. caballus, as a native species. Horses originated in America and were either returned to their native land or never left. More information can be found here: http://protectmustangs.org/?page_id=562

Taxpayers are paying for cruel native wild horse roundups in the West--where Big Oil wants to Frack for oil and natural gas--and needs water to do so. A lot of natural gas will be sold to Asia, to make electricity.

During and after roundups many wild horses are injured: foals are often killed and many mares miscarry their babies. Currently 50,000 native wild horses are stockpiled in holding, at-risk of going to slaughter, and should be returned to live on public land. Less than 23,000 indigenous wild horses are estimated to be living in freedom now.

The National Academy of Sciences reported there is "No Evidence" of overpopulation. Protect Mustangs has called for population studies with a moratorium on roundups yet Congress is turning a deaf ear. Is the Oil and Gas Lobby influencing our democracy?

Indigenous horses fill their ecological niche on public land. They help to reverse desertification, reduce risk of wildfires and create biodiversity for many species to thrive.

Please help protect our native wild horses before the herds are destroyed.

Management policies favoring livestock, energy (fracking) and extractive use over wild horses must change quickly. Native animals must not be driven from their homes so industry can harvest more resources for the export market. Native wild horses help heal the environment and create biodiversity. They must be protected.

A disinformation campaign has been launched to fool Congress and the public into believing wild horse herds are doubling in size every 4 years but that's tobacco science. They are not accounting for mortality--many wild foals don't live to be 2 years old and life on the range is harsh. Their birthrate has increased because they are fighting extinction from excessive roundups and removals.

The National Academy of Sciences reported in 2013 that there is "no evidence" of wild horse overpopulation.

America's treasures and native wild horses must not be wiped out because of the energy driven land grab. We request you protect them today.
