GAS 2 GOVE

The East Arnhem region of the Northern Territory needs GAS 2 GOVE, without it Pacific Aluminium Gove Operations will not be albe to sustain an US$30 million dollar loss per month as heavy fuel oil (currently generating energy in this region) is so expensive. Gas is a cheaper option for energy generation, and the answer to keeping the region surviving and expanding.

The Chief Minister of the Northern Territory (Terry Mills) will only offer the necessary gas with conditions (now widely announced in the world's media), which has been rejected by the mining group. In order to proceed, the mining group needs an unconditional deal.

The people of East Arnhem (not just Nhulunbuy) are asking for the Government and Rio Tinto to come together at the eleventh hour, and ensure a gas deal is reached before Rio's final decision on 31 January 2013.

The East Arnhem Regional Future's Alliance is a proactive group, putting a face on that decision. It will be much easier to decide to 'mothball' (close) the refinery (that currently directly and indirectly employ over 4,000 people) if it is all about profits and a balance sheet. The East Arnhem community wants the Government and Rio Tinto to know Gove is a home to many people (4,000 in Nhulunbuy, and a further 16,000 in neighbouring communities).

No gas = no jobs = no people = no Gove!!
