Dear Boston City Officials, Senators/Congressman:

We the undersigned strongly oppose the disbanding of the Boston Mounted Police.

This historic unit, the oldest in the country, provides great value to the citizens of Boston through their community policing, crowd control, and other services.  They project a professional and positive image of the Boston Police Department and the City of Boston.

Disbanding this unit would result in minor budgetary savings and would be totally offset by the loss of their dedicated service to the citizens of Boston.

I urge you to do everything you can to support and re-activate this distinguished mounted police unit so it can continue its proud legacy of service to the City of Boston.

Thank you for your time

Sincerely,

The mounted police are an essential part of law enforcement in the city, they are wonderful for crowd control and patrolling the city streets. It would be a shame for these magnificent animals & officers to be out of a job. They not only help enforce the law but they bring joy to those who see them and are a historic piece of bostons history.

please keep the mounted police in boston. visiting the city and seeing the mounted police is always a pleasure. not only do they help against crowd control, following criminals into places where cars and foot patrol are not the best option, they strengthen the connection between law enforcement and citizens.

8:58 pm PDT, Jul 29,Boston,Ma. In these lean times, when fears and needs are escalated, people tend to stop and speak with officers on horses(some even talk to the horses).Communication is a basic tool for checking the street's pulse, and fostering civility.

Hi, why would you want to disservice the mounted police! they are a viable force in the community and they are eco friendly to boot! the people of massachusetts enjoy the one on one contact with the police, it is a less threatening community sharing. KEEP THEM ON THE RIDE!

I was raised in Massachusetts for most of my life, and have always enjoyed what the Mounted Police did for the big affairs. The horses have been a part of the history of Boston and surrounding towns. Please find financial backing somewhere to have these units kept alive and working.
# 2,635:

Please save the mounted unit. Whatever you do, don't sell these horses at auction - they might not go to the loving homes you think they are going to and instead might end up trucked across the border (north or south) and slaughtered.

This unit needs to be saved. There is a thing called GLOBAL WARMING and any time we can improve out envrioment by have police officers on a horse instead of a car, running gas even idling and creating more polution I feel is unneccesary. Please the mounted units are necc. To police the parks with out disturbing them. For or children because a police officer on a horse is a lot less scary than one in a car. There are so many reasons that are benificial , even unique in this time. Please save the unit!

Horses are an integral part of our country's heritage. They have proved extremely useful in crowd control and maintaining order. They also bring a humane touch in our highly technical and industrial world. KEEP THE HORSES !!!!!
# 2,607:

Penny wise and pound foolish. Dollar for dollar, the mounted unit got more bang for the buck than a lot of other services us long-suffering tax payers are on the hook for. If a dozen useless turnpike toll takers were fired or if the politicians at the state house could be put on furlough, there would be more than enough money to take care of the mounted unit.

I can't tell you how much I will miss seeing these beautiful horses when i walk through the Common and Public Garden. They are majestic and an important part of Boston. Please find a way to keep them up and running.

Please don't disband this highly efficient and cost-effective method of crowd control, which is also an unsurpassed public relations tool! Dispensing with the oldest mounted police unit in the United States should not be done lightly. Has a truly rigorous attempt been made to find other cost-cutting measures in the police department budget? And what about soliciting the horse-loving public for contributions, as was done in New York City? Let's not kid ourselves: if this unit is disbanded, it will never, ever be reformed.

The Boston P.D. Mounted has over 100 yrs and is rich in the Boston tradition. Dont let it fade into history, like so many other significant things from our past.
