As defined by American Psychiatric Association, pathological gambling is an impulse control disorder that is a chronic and progressive mental illness. I don't want this near my home.

My opinion on the issue is short and sweet: My family lives in DeBary because it's a quiet, peaceful place to live in. I wanted to raise children of my own in the future but not if there's gambling in DeBary. If I wanted to gamble, I'd move to Las Vegas. People who aren't residents of DeBary, if they even know where the city is because it is so small, think of it as a quaint little town and they think changing it would be pointless. Let's keep our city the quiet, calm place it always has been; why change such a good thing that no one's complaining about?

I attended the November meeting in opposition to Debary Downs. We were turned away and told the meeting would be rescheduled and we would be notified by mail. I never recieved any notification and just found out two days after the meeting that it had been rescheduled fro December 13, 2008. Needless to say we missed the meeting and I can only hope that the hundreds of other people opposing Debary Downs were able to show up. This hearing could have been better publicized. I get the feeling this THING is going to be shoved down our throats...like it or not!

NO NO NO!!! I do not want our children to be affected by the crowds that this will bring into our community!! This is a family oriented town and it intended to stay that way!!! NOT to mention it will decrease our property values!!! SO I VOTE NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DeBary Downs (aka: The DeBary Town Center) is not compatible with the small, family community we have created. It will attract crime and other social ills. It will be a blight on our landscape, and it will harm our families.
# 241:
2:08 pm PST, Dec 3, Peter Johnstone, Florida
DeBary Downs will likely increase the traffic on roads and potentially lower the values in our area. At the very least, they should have to pay impact fees covering widening of roads, increasing other infrastructure and paying for additional police and fire officials. Even if they paid, it will likely change the community for the worse.

You know, there is a lot of darkness out there in the world, and sadly, it is only going to get darker, as each day passes. Ther's no going back to better, more familiar, safer times. But now we face this "Goliath", and I am ONE amongst many other "David's"!!! I will make my voice be heard, and I will be a voice for those who are unable, for whatever reason, to speak for themselves! I feel their fears, their pains, their bitterness, their lonliness...All this "Debary Downs" can offer us is, MORE violence; MORE homelessness; MORE drug abusers; MORE spousel abuses; MORE suicides!!!DO WE WANT MORE OF THIS IN OUR PRECIOUSE NEIGHBORHOOD!!!I SAY NO! NO! NO! TEN THOUSAND TIMES NO!

I am concerned for our families throughout West Volusia who will not be able to withstand the demoralizing assault that will steal their earnings, fracture them through addictions of all sorts including GAMBLING and robbing them of a sense of security due to crime. And what will happen to our already plummeting home values? NOT NOW, NOT HERE, NOT EVER! NO DEBARY DOWNS!

This would ruin the well being of the city. I think the land could be used for something better. Please use the land to bring famalies together instead of tearing them apart. We need to look at the values we pass on to the children. This would not be good in Debary!

I have been a Volusia County resident for 18 years, and have observed congestion and crime increase significantly. I have relatives and good friends whose lives have been ruined by gambling addictions. Do not let this cancer invade our community!

The people of DeBary voted down a high school on that site because of traffic. Then senior housing was suggested - too much traffic. A racetrack will not only bring in cars but buses. My other concern is being much too close to residential areas. Tampa Downs is near the fairgrounds & to my knowledge not as close to residential neighborhoods, Daytona Kennel club is also far away from resident neighborhoods.

Save DeBary. They wouldn't put a school there or a public skatepark up the road...but horse races and gambling?

I bought my home in Debary when I was 19 years old, next year I will have been in my house 30 years. I have children and grandchildren that live here in Debary. Look at the problems people are still having with the flooding from Faye, pipes laying around our neighborhood roads. To think that we can't even afford street lights on this side of town, the upkeep of treating well water that turns everything to rust. Dirsksen is a mess, my granddaughter had to walk that road to get to her bus stop. There is no sidewalk on that side, just a ditch! If that road can't even be fixed safe for our kids, I darn sure don't think it should be fixed to accomodate a race track and gambling casino. I think everyone would like to see nice opportunities for our little community that would benefit our community as a whole. Something that would bring job opportunities that contribute to the community in a positive way. Do some research on other places that have casinos in their towns, it will throw a red flag for sure. Aside from the traffic and unsavory activity that follows these type businesses, IMO, this type of big business and cheap paying jobs is not a plus for our town.

Please do not ruin the small town atmosphere of DeBary by allowing DeBary Downs to be a reality. The citizens of the town do not support this project!
# 224:

I am incensed on several levels. First, that our city and county councils would even entertain dealing with such an under handed company. They need to get the dollar signs out of their eyes and consider the people who make this city their home. We need to enhance the community feel and not support a project that will just bring more problems. Secondly, something that affects our city's well-being should be voted on by the residents of Debary, not forced on us by the few who sit on the councils. Some of the past decisions have shown me that these people don't have the good of the people who elected them at heart. It always seems to be about the money.

NO HORSE TACKS, GAMBLING CASINO'S, CARD ROOMS, PARIMUTUAL GAMING IN DEBARY OR ANYWHERE ELSE IN VOLUSIA COUNTY FLORIDA. I moved to DeBary 7 years ago to enjoy the safe quiet nice place to live. We do note need drug sales, crime, prostitution in the area. Please do NOT allow it. Thank you, Earnest Najorka

To Whom it may concern, It is my sincere desire that the proposed horse track/poker house is not permitted to be built within or near the City of DeBary. It is not the type of atmosphere we are trying to promote here in our small hometown. Respectfully, Todd Pulver

Let's have a public meeting to discuss the implications of gambling in our back yard. I would like to voice my concerns to my elected city and county officials. I understand George Coleman and Chris Carson, both OUTGOING members of our city government, are the only proponents of this project. I do NOT want this project built in my hometown. I DO want my voice heard. We should all be calling and writing DeBary City and Volusia County council members to voice our concerns. Last night at a small meeting of concerned citizens held in a DeBary church, we learned the Nov 13th DeBary City council meeting to discuss this project may have been changed to Nov 21st. Call the DeBary City clerk to stay apprised of the latest meeting dates and ATTEND to have your voice heard! I find horse racing tracks to be beautiful and relaxing.I came from Illinois and there is a race track there called Arlington Race Track.I miss going there to spend the day.Bring on DeBary Downs and give people some entertainment.Look up Arlington Park Race Track and see how nice it can be.

Where are those cows going to roam? Too much unneeded traffic problems. More reason for alcholics to drive unsafely in our small City w/ very few sherrif's patrolling as it is!

I am completely against this project which brings a harness track and poker rooms to this city. I am hopeful the people of our city will stand up and be counted and demand a special election to see if people even want it. I don't agree with just pushing it through without the voice of the people.
# 210:

I believe that the people of DeBary should have a chance to vote on whether they want this in their community or not. City Council members may not have input from the majority of their constituents.

# 208:

We do not wish to have gambling in Debary in any form or fashion. We do not want the crime, the added traffic, or the overbearing influence the industry would have on our local politics. Debary has always been a nice residential comunity and we would like for it to remain that way and not turn into a small version of Atlantic city.
# 205:

Too much traffic and eventually it would draw pawn shops and other businesses of that nature into the area.
# 204:

I'm concerned about the traffic and crime it will bring to our quiet neighborhood. Where ever there are parking lots filled with cars late at night, there is a potential for crime, especially since deals with money and drinking. It will make our streets in DeBary too crowded with more traffic.

I am a Debary resident since 1999. I moved here from Miami Florida. Prior to that I didn't even know Debary eisted. It was only thru looking for homes that I found such a perfect community and place to live. Not to far...yet that country living feeling. I must tell you that I don't agree with the proposed project for a horse track project. I understand what a great form of income this would bring. But the price is not worth what we will be giving up.

I oppose any form of gambling for our city. This is a deceitful way of trying to get it in to our neighborhood.
