Every year dogs and cats are poisoned and die in terrible pain. The poisoning of animals is inhumane and illegal. Nevertheless, this practice continues on a daily basis across the Greece. The poisoners ignore the law, public safety and the animals themselves. But owners who abandon their animals or those indifferent to this brutal act are to blame.
The Animal Welfare Association - Himaira, promotes the ceasing of these criminal activities by addressing the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Interior (the municipalities) and the Ministry of Public Order (the police), through letters to BAN THE SALE OF DANGEROUS PESTICIDES THROUGHOUT GREECE.
HIMAIRA PROMOTES THE FOLLOWING: Shops that sell pesticides must demand the buyers to sign a solemn declaration as to the use of these pesticides and in so doing, declare the purpose, and location of their proposed use. If shop owners are required to collect this information, and buyers understand the consequences if they do not use these pesticides as they are intended to be used, we believe we can reduce the incidence of poisoning in animals.
To be able to change the mindset of the world about the abuses and the poisoning of animals we must make the lives of deliberate poisoners a harder by exposing those people who have no hesitation in using poisons against innocent animals.
ALL Sign to ban the widespread sale of poisons.
ALL Sign to make life difficult for the animal killers.
ALL Sign on the right of life to animals.
We must be advocates for the daily suffering of thousands of animals who suffer and die from poisons???.

How can a fellow EU country allow this disgusting practice. Greece should do more to educate and fund some neutering programmes and build shelters for the homeless animals. The random poisoning is NOT the answer to the problem and as potential tourists find out about this type of thing I feel sure they will not wish to go to any resorts in future. I was unaware of the suffering of stray animals until this year when I went to Kos and it did indeed spoil my holiday to witness all those kittens starving around the bins waiting for scraps of food. It is sickening.
I visit Greek islands every summer and have to make judgements about how badly animals are treated based on my experiences over the fortnight. I keep visiting because I live in hope that the little help I manage to give whilst there does at least help some of the animals at the time. However, I am increasingly becoming upset about the vile things that I know happen to them when the toursits have left.
When do you greeks start to think of your children ? You poison not only the animals, the poison is deep in your country, in earth of all your garbage system and in the hearts of your inhabitants. What do you think how your children will act if poisoning is normal for them ? You raise a nation of heartless ,uneducated, and egoistic poisoners......

I recently visited Crete, I was to speak with other residents who are kind hearted and spend much of their own money on looking after the homeless animals in Crete, throughout the year. Please, please consider that you are part of a civilated Europe, please stop the cruelty of animals that I experienced during my time in your beautiful country, PLEASE THINK TWICE.
