Dear Representative Joseph Courtney,

We the undersigned ask that you sign on to become a co-sponsor in the House of Representatives for the nonpartisan bill HR 808 to establish a United States Department of Peace and Nonviolence.  We will gratefully defend and support you for taking this courageous political stance.

The time is ripe for a Department of Peace.  Our national rates of homicide, suicide, bullying, rape, child and spousal abuse, violence in our media, and spending on the military, are shocking.  The World Health Organization estimates the epidemic of violence in our homes, schools, streets, prisons, and among police, gangs, and ethnic groups to cost $300 billion per year.

The annual direct cost of US military involvement in violent conflict is currently $666 billion; the indirect costs -- of veteran's benefits and interest on the national debt due to military spending -- are over $300 billion.   Currently, State Department funding for diplomacy and development, $35 billion, does not address violence within the USA or terrorism.

With a Department of Peace, the United States can be as effective in addressing the sources of violence as in reacting to its symptoms, save trillions of dollars in the process, and provide a secure and prosperous future for our children, for all children worldwide, and the generations to come.

Implementation of the Department of Peace at the Federal level would provide funding and coordination for nonviolent conflict reconciliation programs that are already proven to be effective.  In addition, as our military forces become skilled in peace-building methodologies and the threat of nuclear weapons is reduced, our national budget can be reclaimed for humanitarian purposes.

Please consider:

   1. The world is watching to see if America will walk the talk of our founding fathers, supporting human rights and freedom for everyone.
   2. What could be more important than creating true security by living in peace with our fellow human beings everywhere?
   3. How better to support our interests and defuse terrorism than to create a Department of Peace?
   4. How can we solve our climate problems if we are burning our resources in conflict?
   5. How long do you think we have to get it right?

The time to act is now.

Please support our vision for national and global peace by becoming a co-sponsor of HR 808, the bill to establish a U.S. Department of Peace and Nonviolence.

We thank you for your time and consideration.

Respectfully submitted,

Your constituents in Connecticut's 2nd District

Time has proven that all our strtegies of war have not made us safer let alone invinsible. As a member of the global community, we need to work together with our fellow human beings for the benefit of all. War is of no benefit to anyone. Let's try peace. What have we got to lose?

I see peace as a cooperative effort among all peoples to address such things as hunger, disease, global warming, natural disasters and so many more areas where we should be helping one another and learning from one another. Congressman Courtney, we elected you because we believe you share this vision. Help us to help you. Please co-sponsor this most significant and important piece of legislation for all of us!

A Department of Peace is so very important because we need our government to devote a section to research and pursuit of peace initiatives and endeavors. The War Paradigm has not been successful for the people of our nation. We need to replace the War Paradigm with a Peace Paradigm and we need a governmental Department dedicated to achieving that.

My vision for peace is one where our powerful nation uses its strength and money to support its own people and the people of the world to develop economies and lifestyles that are respectful and sustainable to the environment, their cultures, and their communities. Peace means an atmosphere of sharing and caring for eachother and our world, so that everyone can live free of fear, violence, poverty, hunger, thirst, homelessness, ignorance, disrespect. Please help us to achieve this vision.

I think that in the current times we have to do a bit more thinking before acting if at all possible. We not only have to consider ourselves but the world community as well.I also believe our elected officials have to take a stronger stand on issues they really believe will help our ailing country rather than paying attention to the people who have paid the most money during their campaigns.I think establishing a Dept.of Peace in itself reflects changes that are in the right direction. Please consider seriously the effects a Dept. of Peace can have for us in the future.

Our war department consumes more than half our resources. It is time that we devoted serious energies and resources to making this a more peaceful world. Guns and bombs and confrontation are not the answer. Let's begin with a Department of Peace. Please sign on

There are many petitions going round these days, and I'd rather make the case for this cabinet level department in person, but will wait for another day. Meanwhile, please know this is truly important, as an issue, and as an idea. I hope you will at least begin studying what the bill says. Our society is so ridden with violence, top to bottom. We need at least as much energy and national treasure devoted to non violent conflict resolution (nationally and internationally) as a problem, as is currently devoted to conflict and wars. You could be an early and significant leader in this field, a useful and productive counterpoint to all the weapons submarines funded in our district. It is a small, but truly important step. Please become a cosponsor. Thank you.
